  12.     BACKGROUND
  13.  
  14.       You can intall Stacker 3.0 on a notebook computer that has 
  15.       only a C drive if it can transfer files to and from a second 
  16.       larger computer.  You must start the installation on the 
  17.       larger computer. 
  18.   
  19.     PROCEDURE
  20.  
  21.       The Setup procedure explains most of your choices on the 
  22.       screen.  The Stacker for Windows & DOS User's Guide contains 
  23.       additional information.  This procedure varies somewhat to 
  24.       allow you to install Stacker on a floppyless notebook.
  25.  
  26.         1.  Create a STACKER directory on the C drive of the 
  27.         notebook.  Change to the C drive and type:
  28.     
  29.             MD STACKER <Enter>
  30.  
  31.         2.  Transfer the Stacker files from the larger computer to 
  32.         the STACKER directory on the notebook.
  33.  
  34.         If Stacker has been installed on that computer, the 
  35.         files are probably in a directory named C:\STACKER.  
  36.         Otherwise you can transfer them from the floppy disks. 
  37.     
  38.         3.  Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the notebook's C drive. 
  39.         To the end of the PATH statement, add 
  40.  
  41.             ;C:\STACKER
  42.  
  43.         If there is no PATH statement, add this line:
  44.  
  45.             PATH C:\STACKER
  46.  
  47.         4.  To change to the STACKER directory on the C drive, 
  48.         type:
  49.  
  50.             CD STACKER <Enter>
  51.  
  52.         5.  To personalize Stacker, type:
  53.  
  54.             SETUP /=F <Enter> 
  55.     
  56.         When Setup asks you to insert a disk, choose Exit to 
  57.         end Setup.

  72.         6.  To start creating a Stacker drive, type:
  73.  
  74.             SETUP <Enter>
  75.     
  76.         7.  If offered a choice between Express and Custom, choose 
  77.         Custom and select drive C.
  78.  
  79.         8.  When offered a choice between "Entire Drive" and "Free 
  80.         Space", choose Free Space.
  81.  
  82.         9.  In the "Space to Use" field, type 1 to build an empty 
  83.         Stacker drive that is 1 MB in size, then choose 
  84.         "Stack".
  85.  
  86.         10. When the Stacker drive is created, let Setup restart 
  87.         your computer to mount the new drive as D.
  88.  
  89.         11. Use this command to copy the Stacker files to the empty 
  90.         Stacker drive:

  92.             COPY C:\STACKER\*.* D:\ <Enter>
  93.  
  94.         12. To start compressing the data on C drive, type:
  95.  
  96.             D:\SETUP <Enter>
  97.     
  98.         13. Select drive C.
  99.  
  100.         14. When offered a choice between "Entire Drive" and "Free 
  101.         Space", choose Entire Drive.
  102.  
  103.         15. Next, choose "Stack".
  104.  
  105.         16. When the Stacker drive is created, let Setup restart 
  106.         your computer to mount the new drive.
  107.  
  108.         17. After Setup restarts your computer, type:
  109.  
  110.             CD \STACKER <Enter>
  111.  
  112.         18. To remove the temporary drive D, type:
  113.     
  114.             REMOVDRV D: <Enter> 
  115.         
  116.         19. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on drive C: to remove the 
  117.         reference to the temporary D drive.  The line should 
  118.         read as follows:
  119.  
  120.             DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK
  121.  
  122.         20. Restart your computer again.  Drive C is now a Stacker 
  123.         drive.
